hazelnut cultivation

This project is a sub-activity within the micro-support ”Startgas”.

About the project

The project is about establishing a small-scale cultivation of hazelnuts on a farm outside Värnamo. By planting large-fruited hazel bushes on arable land that has not been actively used before, the project aims to explore the possibilities of producing Swedish-grown nuts in Småland.

The cultivation has been established with consideration for both production and biodiversity, where grass and meadow flowers have been sown to benefit pollinators and the ecosystem. The project is also a practical test of which varieties work in the region's climate and growing conditions. The results show that the establishment has worked well and that the bushes are developing according to plan, with hopes for a harvest within a few years. The initiative contributes both to local food production and increased knowledge about alternative cultivation methods.
